We might display an alternative credit card for you to consider.

Limit the number of searches on your credit record

Every time you apply for credit it leaves an imprint on your credit record known as a ‘search’. Too many searches can affect your credit rating and lower your credit score, meaning you’re less likely to be approved in future.

In the past, the only way to see if you’d be approved for a credit card or loan was to make a full application, generating another search.

Now, on selected MBNA credit cards, you can complete a simple eligibility check first, which won't affect your credit rating. We’ll only complete a full search if you go on to submit a full credit card application.

How does it work?

You’ll need to give us:

  • Your name, address and date of birth.
  • Whether you own your home, are a tenant or live with your parents.
  • How much your mortgage or rent payment is.
  • Your employment situation and income.

This is so we can calculate your score and assess your eligibility for the card you’ve chosen. Our eligibility check terms apply. If you’re not eligible to apply for that particular product, we might be able to offer you an alternative to consider.

Like the rest of our site, the eligibility check is safe and secure. Your information is protected by our privacy policy.

No affect on your credit file

Searches made by the eligibility check only leave what’s called a ‘quotation search’ on your credit file. Lenders looking at your file won’t take them into account when making a lending decision.

If you obtain a copy of your credit file for yourself, the quotation searches will show up in the ‘Other searches’ section.

You can get a copy of your credit file from:

Improving your credit file

The simplest way to improve your credit file is to pay your credit facilities, including cards, loans and mortgage, on time every month. Make sure you keep within agreed credit limits too. Register on the electoral roll where you live as this will increase your credit score and make it easier to prove your address history.

Potential lenders will check all these when you make an application with them. They’ll also look at how much credit you owe compared to the income you earn.

Any adverse information held against you, such as county court judgements (CCJs) or bankruptcies, will show up on your credit report and could make it harder to obtain credit.
