A quick summary

Flooding is becoming more common across the UK and you don’t need to live near a river or the coast to be affected.
That’s why we’ve put together some simple guidance to help you before, during and after a flood.

Get free 24-hour flood warnings

You can sign up for free warnings by phone, text or email. They give you valuable extra time to get your home or business ready.

Sign up for flood warnings in EnglandScotland or Wales, and use flood maps to check risk levels in Northern Ireland.

  • Create a flood plan

Having a plan prepared helps you act quickly when you need to. Include key contacts like Floodline and your utility providers.

Check if your area is at risk

More intense rainfall and more homes built on floodplains mean surface water and groundwater flooding are now a growing threat.

You can easily check your risk by calling Floodline on 0345 988 1188

    Protect yourself in advance

    • Make sure you know how to turn off your gas, water and electricity (your supplier can show you how).
    • Put together a waterproof grab bag with essentials like emergency money, your insurance documents, a torch and a battery powered radio.
    • If you need them, consider buying flood protection products such as floodboards, airbrick covers and toilet bungs to help prevent backflow.
    • Find independent advice and products from the National Flood Forum.
  • If a flood is imminent

    • If it’s safe, switch off your gas and electricity but never touch electrics while standing in water.
    • Move valuables and anything important to higher levels upstairs if you can.
    • Plug anywhere water could enter your home and close non-return valves if you have them (use towels and cloths to plug inlet pipes).
    • Disconnect appliances that use water (such as washing machines or dishwashers).
    • If you’re asked to evacuate, pack spare clothing and follow any instructions from the emergency services.
  • Getting back to normal

    • Only return when the emergency services confirm it’s safe.
    • Contact your gas, electricity and water suppliers to check whether your services are back online.
    • Even if damage looks minor, have your gas and electrical systems checked by qualified engineers as floodwater can cause hidden problems.
    • Don’t throw away damaged items yet, keep samples of carpets and rugs and take photos of any items affected to support your claim.
    • If it’s safe, open windows to help your home begin drying out.
