Applying for a credit card

Read answers to frequently asked questions, including how long it takes to receive a new card.

How long will it take to receive my card?

If your application's been approved, your card will arrive within 7-10 business days.

What credit limit will I get?

Your credit limit depends on affordability and credit history, so it's individual to you.

We're a responsible lender, so we'll review your credit report and what you can reasonably afford to repay before we give you a decision.

If you're approved, your new credit limit will be available straightaway. If you're not approved, it's a good idea to wait at least 6 months before making another application. The answer is likely to be the same and could have a negative impact on your credit record.

Find out more about building and maintaining healthy credit on our credit reports explained page.

When will I find out if my application's been approved?

If you apply online between 6am-midnight Mon to Fri, or 6am-9pm Sat and Sun, you're more likely to get a decision there and then.

It can take longer if you apply outside these times, or if your application needs to go to one of our credit experts to review. We always aim to be in touch as soon as we can, responding to most applications within 7-10 days.

Can you change my credit file?

We can't change your credit file unless it's incorrect. If you think we've made a mistake in how we've reported your info, you can let us know and we'll investigate.

Please send a copy of your credit report and explain the error by post:

You can request a copy of your credit report from Experian, Equifax, Callcredit, or Noddle.

How do I apply for a credit card?

Before you apply, use our eligibility checker to find out which cards you're eligible to apply for. Unlike the full application, filling it out doesn't affect your credit rating and it's a bit of a time saver too.

Once you've done this and know which cards you're eligible to apply for, you can go on to make a full application.  You can also call us to apply over the phone on: 0800 10 55 10

Our basic eligibility criteria is:

  • You must be a UK resident.
  • Had a permanent UK address for at least 3 years.
  • Be employed and not a student.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Have a good credit rating/history.

For all the details about applying and stuff to consider, visit our applying for credit page.

I haven't received my signature pack. What should I do?

If your application's been accepted, and you asked to receive your terms and conditions in the post, a signature pack should be with you within 7-10 days. If you're still waiting after that, call us on 0800 0851 709, Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm.

My credit card application was declined, can I apply again?

It's a good idea to wait at least 6 months before making another application, otherwise you're likely to be declined again, which could have a negative effect on your credit report.

Improving your credit rating over time means you're more likely to be approved in future. Find out more on our applying for credit page.

To appeal a decision, write to us, call us on the good old phone, or send a secure message online. All the details are on our contact us page. Just so you know, appealing may include another credit check which could be recorded on your credit file.

I was told I'm likely to be eligible but my application was declined, why is that?

The eligibility check asks for info about your financial responsibilities, employment status and home address. We use these details, your credit record, and any info we already hold about you, to decide how likely you are to be accepted.

There are still no guarantees that your full application will be successful. You could still be declined based on info you provide after the eligibility check, and after a full credit application search has been completed.

What's the difference between an eligibility check and a full credit card application?

The eligibility check helps us find out which cards you're likely to be accepted for before you decide to do a full application. The search won't affect your credit rating and will only be registered as a 'quotation search'. These searches can be seen by other organisations viewing your credit file, but they won't affect their lending decisions.

If you choose a card and do a full application, a full credit search will be done.

Start the eligibility check and find out which cards you could apply for.

Important info
Multiple credit applications to different organisations over a short period can have a negative effect on your credit rating. Lenders will see multiple searches and may assume you've been declined by others, so will be less likely to give you credit.

How do I find out more about my credit report?

You can find out more about your credit report, and how to maintain it on our credit reports explained page.

I've a BFPO address - can I still apply?

Yes, but you won't be able to apply online. To get started the old fashioned way, give us a call on 0800 068 8788, Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm.

I've been invited to apply for a different credit card to the one I saw advertised, why is that?

After completing the eligibility check, you might be shown an alternative credit card you're more likely to be accepted for.

To give you these results we consider:

  • Your credit report and how you've managed credit in the past.
  • Financial and salary information.
  • Info from any previous and existing MBNA accounts.

Start the eligibility check and find out which cards you could apply for.

Good to know
The eligibility check won't affect your credit rating as it'll be registered on your credit file as a 'quotation search' only. Although these searches can be seen by other organisations viewing your credit file, they're not taken into account when making lending decisions about you.

Will I receive the advertised APR?

At least 51% of approved customers get the advertised APR and interest rate. We reserve the right to change your interest rates based on changes to the cost of providing the service to you, funding costs, or base rates. Changes to your interest rate can also depend on how well you manage your credit card account - we'll let you know before we do this, but it's in your interest to manage your credit card account well.

How do you assess my eligibility with limited information about me?

The eligibility check asks for some basic info on your financial responsibilities, employment status and home address. These details, along with your credit record and any info we already hold from current or previous accounts, gives us sufficient information to give you an initial decision on how likely you are to be accepted, all without conducting a full credit search or affecting your credit rating.

Start the eligibility check and find out which cards you could apply for.

My application wasn't approved, can I appeal this decision?

You can appeal a decision made on an application submitted in the last 60 days. Our second review is final, so make sure you include all information that supports your application. Formatting or spelling errors might affect your result, because the info won't match your credit report, so it's important to check everything's correct before you submit.

Multiple applications over a short period of time, outstanding debts, or a limited credit history can negatively affect your application. If you think one of these reasons might be why your application was rejected the first time, it's a good idea to wait before trying again.
