What’s the most popular movie ever made? We do the maths

Released in December 2015, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is already set to smash box office records but, despite the headlines, can it really stand up to the popularity of old classics like Gone with the Wind, Titanic or even the first Star Wars film?

When it comes down to the numbers, we’re not sure the results are entirely fair. Both money and movies have moved on since the 1930s and comparing films from different eras isn’t necessarily a fair fight. Finding out what the top-grossing movies would be if they’d been released in 2016 involves a little bit of maths.

Never the type to back away from an equation, the brains at MBNA have flexed their calculation skills to show you which movie, no matter when it was made, is the real box office smash.

Find out below if your favourite movie made the cut with our worldwide all-time box office winners - we’re sure the figures will defy your expectations.

While you’re at it, why not take a look at our own little movie about everything credit cardy… totally Oscar-worthy, or at least we think so. Watch the MBNA TV advert.
