MBNA goes out-of-this-world for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 launch

Following our successful collaboration with Disney last year on animated blockbuster Moana, we’ve teamed up again – this time to celebrate the release of Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. We were super-excited to sponsor the star-studded European launch with a unique blue-carpet experience at the Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith on Monday 24 April.

Among the stars who rocked up to the event were Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Dave Bautista and Michael Rooker, who all reprised their roles from the first film, along with newcomers Pom Klementieff and Kurt Russell, who plays Starlord’s/Peter Quill’s mysterious father, Ego. Writer and director James Gunn and legendary DJ Seb Fontaine, who DJ’ed the launch event, also put in an appearance on the blue carpet.

The film sees the intrepid band of heroes come together to save the universe once again, and just like in the first movie, music features really heavily in the story. Vol. 2 looks set to follow in the footsteps of its predecessor with another smash-hit soundtrack.

To continue this musical theme, we ran a prize-draw on social media where we asked people to tell us what’s their feel-good track and why they love it so much. The top-tracks - chosen by the discerning MBNA musicologists - were included on our own #GoodStuffMix, and one lucky person, Iain Job from Scotland, also bagged himself an all-expenses trip to Las Vegas just for letting us know his special song of Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder.

During the launch event, our own roving reporter was on-hand armed with a microphone to get the Hollywood stars’ to reveal their own #GoodStuffMix top track, and answer a series of other music-based questions.

Check out @MBNA on Twitter, or our Facebook to see their responses. Some of the choices might surprise you. See if you can guess who picked Hanson’s MMMBop – now that’s our kinda tune!

As well as all this great stuff, we also transformed five MBNA Thames Clippers into a fleet of intergalactic-themed ships, where we wrapped the vessels with characters from the movie, plus lots of exciting Guardians-themed stuff on the inside.

MBNA: Obviously the soundtrack to the movie’s absolutely killer, is there one song that puts a smile on your face when you hear it?

(Scenes of people dressed up as Starlord, and shots of crowd queuing for the premier. The name of the film is written in big letters on the venue)

Chris Pratt: Oh man, probably The Chain by Fleetwood Mac – that’s a song that really gets me going, I love that song.

Dave Bautista: Anything that’s not new (laughs).

Zoe Saldana: I would say Ariana Grande, Into You because I think it’s a sexy song.

(Photographers with huge lenses jostling for the best shot)

Seb Fontaine (DJ): When we watched the first movie, I thought it was the best movie soundtrack. I mean I love ELO, and the Piña Colada song and all of those things. Piña Colada song’s a bit of a guilty pleasure so I’m happy that’s in the movie. Bit of Rolling Stones, bit of T-Rex.

(Kurt Russell waving)

MBNA: What are your top tips for making the perfect mixtape?

(More cast shots, and photographers)

Dave Bautista: I think it’s in your own personal interest, you know. I think it’s all about what you love.

Chris Pratt: Go for sentimentality! Find a song that means something to the two of you that reminds you of a memory or a place, or a girl, or a guy, or whatever it is.

James Gunn (director): If I love a song, I don’t feel guilty about it.
