Ditch the Mocha for WWF

We all enjoy the little luxuries in life. A cup of coffee prepared just the way we like it by our favourite barista. The takeaway on a Saturday that gives us a night away from the oven. That family trip to the cinema to check out the latest blockbuster, rather than waiting until we can stream it from the comfort of our own sofas.
But have you ever stopped to think how the cost of these little luxuries adds up over the course of a year?
On average, each UK household spends £7.50 a week on coffee, while takeaway curries work out at £340 over the course a year. Cinema tickets set us back £135, and the annual bill for eating out at restaurants comes in at just under £900.
Added together, as a nation we spend a staggering £970m each year dining out and a further £366m on tempting take-outs. Going to the movies weighs in at just under £146m, while all those lattes and mochas total an eye-watering £420m.

All these big numbers got us wondering how much good stuff we could do with that cash – particularly for a great cause.
We’ve teamed up with MBNA Thames Clippers to try and help the lovely people at WWF double wild tiger numbers by 2022 – they’ve plummeted by a shocking 95 per cent since the start of the 20th century.

So, what difference could we make to wild tigers, as well as some of the planet’s other endangered species, if we sacrificed a few luxuries and gave the money to a great cause like WWF instead?
Thanks to the efforts of organisations like WWF and the governments of the tiger range states, global tiger numbers increased for the first time in conservation history last year. However, there’s still so much more to be done. With only around 3,900 tigers left in the wild, WWF needs more tiger protectors to achieve their aim of doubling wild tigers by 2022.
If just three people sacrificed coffee for a week, that £22.50 could more than cover the costs of an anti-poaching patrol of three people for one day to protect tigers on the outskirts of Bardia National Park in Nepal.
The average weekly spend on cinema tickets for 100 people (£250) would fund a special camera used to help monitor numbers in the tiger’s natural habitat.
Elegant and elusive, this rare big cat faces a daily fight for survival in the high, rugged mountain landscapes of the Himalayas and central Asia.
Their numbers have declined by at least 20% in under two decades due to poaching and coming into conflict with people. But the fact they live high up in the mountains makes it tricky to track exact figures.
Twenty people ditching their average weekly spend on coffee – a total cost of £150 – could pay for one camera trap to help support vital monitoring of snow leopard numbers.
This charismatic creature is adored the world over. Yet the destruction of forests in their primary habitat in China isolates pandas and prevents them from mating, as well as leaving them without the precious bamboo they need to survive.
The average weekly takeaway spend of three people (£20.50) would pay for two patrol members to spend a day in the field protecting vital panda habitats.
Essentially a tank on legs, the rhinoceros is Africa’s armoured giant and has been on our planet for millions of years.
But poaching for their horns and habitat loss are huge threats to both white and black rhinos. While the work of organisations like WWF have helped white rhino numbers recover slightly to 20,000, there are only 5,000 of its black counterpart left in the wild.
If 300 people in the UK sacrificed dinner out for a week, that £5,190 could pay to ‘notch’ 20 rhinos, allowing conservationists to better monitor numbers in the Maasai Mara National Reserve – home to a vital population of black rhinos.
