If the MBNA Chester Vase race was a person, it would be getting a telegram from the Queen this year. Yes, that’s right, it’s reached the ripe old age of 100 (well, it’s the 100th time it will be run this year, so close enough).
To mark this special milestone, the race has been renamed ‘Centennial Celebration – MBNA Chester Vase’ for 2018. We’ll be the main sponsor as we have been for the last 23 years. There’ll also be lots of stuff happening before the race on City Day (Wednesday 9 May) - the opening day of the season at Chester Racecourse.
We’re also giving away 100 tickets to City Day. To be in with a chance of winning, you’ll need to track down one of our 25 boxes of specially commissioned MBNA Chester Vase pin badges which have been hidden at various locations around Chester and Merseyside.
Starting Monday 16 April 2018 for 5 days, we’ll be sharing clues to the pins’ whereabouts for that day. Each location will have 5 boxes containing 4 pins each, so there’s 25 boxes containing a total of 100 pins up for grabs.
To win, you’ll need to:
- Identify the location where we’ve hidden the winning boxes (keep it to yourself though).
- Make your way to that location.
- Say the winning phrase to a member of staff.
- Winning phrase – “Make good stuff happen for me”
- Be given a box containing 4 Chester Vase pin badges.
Boxes will be issued on a first come, first served basis. Each pin badge is the equivalent of one ticket for the race day (Wednesday 9 May 2018). Details on how to get your tickets will be provided in the boxes.

To whet your appetite before all that, we thought we’d dig out a few interesting facts and figures (you know how much we love our facts and figures) about this iconic race, and take a look at some of the main runners and riders who’ve featured over the years.
The Derby is Britain’s richest horserace, held at Epsom in June every year. The MBNA Chester Vase traditionally acts as a trial for the race with previous Chester Vase runners doing well at The Derby.
Ryan Moore has 7 wins – 2008, 2011 and 2013-2017 – on 7 different horses. Familiar names Willie Carson and Pat Eddery have both picked up 4 victories apiece. Fan-favourite Frankie Dettori has also tasted success once over the 1 mile, 4 furlongs, 63 yard course.
Aidan O’Brien has 8 wins, including the last 5 years with horses ridden by Ryan Moore, and also trained the top 3 in 2017’s race.
Among the big name gee-gees who’ve appeared and won the MBNA Chester Vase are Millenary and Ruler of the World, who went on to win The Derby in 2013. Last year, Wings of Eagles came second in the MBNA Chester Vase before going on to win The Derby. But perhaps the best-known of the lot is Shergar, who also won The Derby, Irish Derby, King George V1, and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes back in 1981 following his victory in Chester.
