To access our services at any time, all you need is an internet enabled device and a stable internet connection. When it comes to keeping your information secure while you're out and about however, there are a few important things to consider:
- Keep your mobile device updated
- Use the auto-lock feature
- Wireless internet security
- Secure home Wi-Fi
- Mobile security software
- Be careful with Bluetooth
- Stay secure

Wireless internet security
It's great to be able to connect to the internet wherever you are, but as wireless uses radio waves instead of wires to transmit data; your information may be more vulnerable. These are the connection types:
- Wi-Fi - provides an internet connection within the limited range of a wired modem. You may have Wi-Fi at home, but you’ll also find Wi-Fi offered at selected public places, known as ‘hot-spots’.
- Mobile internet (e.g. 3G) - provides an internet connection from your mobile network operator and can be accessed wherever mobile reception is available.
So which to use? Well actually, you can use both...
Wi-Fi is great for general surfing, but unless you know the connection is secure, it may not be safe to enter sensitive information (e.g. log in details), as information could be intercepted by a third party.
We recommend that you use a mobile internet (3G) connection if you’re entering sensitive information, because your network provider uses encryption software to protect the information transmitted.

Secure home Wi-Fi
You may not be able to do anything about the security of public Wi-Fi hotspots, but you can reinforce your home Wi-Fi connection for more secure surfing:
- Restrict access your internet connection with a unique password
- Check your modem guidebook and enable any encryption tools (e.g. WPA2)
- Use a firewall/anti-virus on devices which you use to access the internet

Mobile security software
As you access the internet on your mobile device in the same way you do on your computer, you should consider protecting it in the same way. Security software is widely available for your mobile which:
- Encrypts personal information
- Blocks malicious software which can capture data
- Provides alerts about website/connection security

Be careful with Bluetooth
Bluetooth is a short-range wireless network, which allows devices like computers and phones to communicate with one another. Leaving it enabled can allow others to see and potentially transfer the information stored on your mobile device. Simple advice - only switch it on when you need to use it.
